BIRD BUDDY SOLAR SOFTWARE
Even if they one day fix the software, we would first have to connect the camera to the wifi to get the software update.

So basically we are stuck with a cheap plastic bird feeder that cost $200+. Our engineers are aware of the problem and are working on a solution." At the moment, this still looks like we will only be able to address it comprehensively in one of the future firmware updates. "From our experience, Bird Buddy has trouble connecting to some mesh network setups and dual-band routers. Of course, we are well beyond any return window: See response from customer support after multiple service requests and weeks of waiting on a response. We use an Eero mesh system, which is pretty common. Why do I need to contact Bird Buddy to be able to view my BB on an iPad as well as on my iPhone? Ridiculous.ĭO Not BUY! RETURN! PRODUCT AND CUSTOMER SERVICE IS TERRIBLE! Never was able to connect the camera to wifi. One other thing that bugs me is that I don’t think you can easily pair with other devices. After all, my Arlo’s run 24/7 and get lots of activity, film in HD, light up when activated after dusk, and I can get 3-4 weeks from a single charge…. But the design of the Bird Buddy house and the battery life could be easily fixed. I am not a software developer so I don’t know the effort required to fix the app. The way the camera attaches to the very short cord is not great.Īmazon sells what appear to be ripoffs of Bird Buddy and I don’t totally trust the positive reviews. The battery life is laughably less than what was promised and the solar roof as best as I can tell does very little, even in bright sunlight. I use a funnel and it isn’t too hard to get the seed in, but that door will break at some point and it appears that you are out of luck when that happens (until amarandagasi can 3D print replacements). I wish there was a door in the roof and you could drop food straight down into the feeder. The app is confusing and needs a lot of work. I don’t want an alert for the same bird moving around in the feeder, or even the same bird coming back say within a few hours. That is why I got it so it supersedes the many cons. The pros are that I get cute photos of lots of birds. I actually didn't even notice that I had two breeds of sparrows around here until the Bird Buddy identified it, so that was really neat! So far I've had: juncos, cardinals, titmice, chickadees, nuthatches, a blue jay, and two different breeds of sparrows. So take what I say with a grain of salt! 😂 I'm a big hardware nerd, am quite savvy with computers, and absolutely love birds, so I may be the best target audience for it haha. The app might be a little confusing for people who are not tech-savvy, so keep that in mind. I have a 3D printer so I printed the perch that u/amarandagasi made (which is really great btw!) and that seems to really help the tiny birds like chickadees who can't grip the "stage" all too well. I've enjoyed hanging out with this community and posting pictures.

😁Īll in all, I think it's a really fun gadget. After getting like 6 photos in a row where I have to type in junco, it would be great to just have my last typed one in there.Įdit: as of 12/27/22, they fixed that issue already! Sweet.

For instance, when I do land in that 15% of it being a junco turned around, it will give you like 4 options of what it thinks it is, but it would be great if they would also put your last guess in there. The pictures are good quality but the app could use a bit of QoL adjustments. 15% of the time it asks me what the bird is (usually a junco turned around or something) and 5% of the time it'll mis-identify what bird it is, so I'm pretty happy with it. The AI isn't bad, it seems to recognize the correct bird 80% of the time. However I don't mind going out and grabbing the module and charging it, though I am looking into buying one of those external solar panels because I've seen good results on this sub. I haven't had any issues yet, other than the battery life only lasting 2-3 days even with the solar panel add-on.
